The common name for Eucalyptus regnans is Mountain Ash. This tree is the tallest hardwood in the world with specimens reaching 80 meters (263 feet) or more in height. It is also the tallest flowering plant in the world.
The Mountain Ash will display rough fibrous bark to about halfway up trunk, then smooth, white to grey-green bark will take over for the remainder of the tree. This species spans a broad ecological range from damp forest to cool temperate rainforest.
Height: the tallest Eucalyptus regnans was measured at 326 feet (99 meters) tall. There is evidence that suggests they have grown to 400 and perhaps 500 feet (122 to 152 meters) in the recent past.
Lifespan: most live 350 to 400 years.
Habitat and Range: The species is native to Australia. It grows from sea level to mountainous regions and prefers wet, high canopy forests in the Otway Ranges in southern Victoria, the Gippsland Forests in eastern Victoria, also in north-eastern and southern Tasmania regions.
