Jeff: Good point. Incandescents are warm. Imagine that. The LED lights are not good at area lighting, only beams of light, and they are incredibly expensive - perhaps 50x the incandescents. Fluorescents are 5-10x as expensive as incandescents, and they don't have clear flame-tip bulbs that work on a dimmer switch, although they do make fluorescents that will dim using a normal incandescent dimmer switch.

IN COLDER CLIMATES EDISON LIGHT BULBS HEAT PEOPLE UNDER READING LAMPS DURING WINTER AND SHOULD BE INTERCHANGE WITH LED BULBS OR FLORESCENTS DURING OTHER SEASONS TO SAVE MAXIMUM ENERGY. HEAT IN THE COLD LOWERS THE MUCH WORSE THERMOSTAT.

All my flourescents look great, with the whole spectrum of colors represented.. These new bulbs aren't the same ones you had in school 20 years ago. Recently they have been saving me 20+ bucks a month, and paid themselves off in a grand total of 6 months.

But I do agree, this legislation is certainly the wrong direction.

Florescent bulbs, in spite of years of research, still require subsidies to be affordable???

I'm not sure what your criterion for affordable is, but here in southern California, my marginal rate for elecricity is nearing $ .50/KWh, and the cost advantage of florescents is blindingly obvious to anyone who troubles to do the arithmetic.

It's true that this measure is irritatingly suggestive of the nanny state telling people what is good for them, but it's hardly necessary to lose bowel control over it. Since most Americans are apparently incapable or too lazy to do the sums, perhaps the government does know better.

You forgot to mention the fact that fluorescent bulbs are classified as household hazardous waste because of the mercury content, and must be disposed of properly. I don't think the general public is aware of this, and will continue to dispose even more mercury in the general waste stream.
